Frumentius , a Syrian monk was significant in shaping the character of Ethiopian Christianity. He linked Aksum to Alexandria with the coptic church of Egypt and it was from there, patriarchs were sent for the next fifteen centuries. Akum’s conversion made Ethiopia part of the ancient Christian world. This is a significant reason why Ethiopia became the only county in Africa never to be colonized. The reason or justification did not exist, spreading Christianity .
The Ethiopians divide the year into 12 months of equal 30 days. The remaining five or six days makes an extra month - the reason for ‘13 months of sunshine’ slogan advertised by Ethiopian Tourism. But it is a different story that no one is paid a salary but then neither does one pay the bills!
The Ethiopian system is rooted in history. Early in 5th century AD,Pandorous an Alexandrian monk founded a system of chronology based on Egyptian and Biblical sources and fixed the incarnation of Christ 5,493 years after the then believed date of creation of the world.
Therefore, the first year of Christian Era start at the beginning of Egyptian year 5493. Annianus revised it and placed the birth of Christ in 5501 or eight years earlier. This calendar gained acceptance in Egypt and taken over by the Ethiopians but not the Western Christendom’s.
Ethiopians divide their time differently too. They begin the day at what will be our 6 a.m and their 1 o clock and the day ends at 12 or our 6 p.m in the evening and after that its night.
